About Us

Unheard Voices is committed to dismantling the barriers that limit the opportunities and experiences of D/deaf and Hard of Hearing children. These boundaries often come in the form of communication gaps, social stigmas, limited access to resources, and a lack of inclusive spaces.

We break communication barriers by advocating for accessible tools like sign language education, captioning, and assistive technology, ensuring children and their families can connect and thrive.

We challenge social stigmas by fostering awareness and understanding within communities, empowering children to take pride in their identities.

We tackle educational and social inequities by promoting inclusive environments and providing resources to schools and educators.

We confront isolation by building supportive networks, where children and their families can find connection and community.

At Unheard Voices, breaking boundaries means creating a world where every child is heard, valued, and included—no matter the obstacles they face.

Our Name

Unheard "voices" was chosen for its deep meaning on both literal and figurative levels. For D/deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, the term can represent their ability to communicate in diverse ways—whether through sign language, assistive technologies, or spoken language—and their desire to be understood and valued.

A Call for Advocacy

"Unheard Voices" serves as a rallying cry to amplify these voices, advocate for their rights, and ensure they are acknowledged, respected, and included.

Founders

The founders of Unheard Voices are a resilient and passionate family of five, bound by a shared journey of love, advocacy, and determination. This family’s story is one of navigating life with diverse perspectives on sound, communication, and connection.

The Parents:

  • Hearing Parents with Open Hearts: The two parents are both hearing but deeply committed to bridging the gaps between the hearing and Deaf communities. Their journey began when their first child was diagnosed as Deaf, prompting them to explore the world of Deaf culture and communication during a global pandemic.
  • Advocates and Learners: These parents became lifelong learners and champions for accessibility. They’ve worked tirelessly to ensure their children have equal opportunities, embracing inclusive education and fostering an environment where every family member’s needs are met.
  • Collaborators and Visionaries: Drawing on their experience of navigating medical, educational, and social systems, they became determined to create a more inclusive community.

The Children:

The Eldest Child: Profoundly Deaf from birth, the eldest child was the family’s introduction to the Deaf community. With his parents’ support, he has thrived academically and socially, becoming a role model for his siblings and a strong advocate for Deaf rights while navigating a general education curriculum alongside hearing peers.

The Middle Child: Born with moderate hearing loss, the middle child uses assistive hearing technology. She has embraced her unique identity, finding strength in decorating her devices with her own personal touch.

Her perspective has inspired the family’s mission to foster inclusion and create understanding across diverse experiences of hearing and communication.

The Youngest Child: With mild/moderate hearing loss, the youngest child balances the worlds of spoken language and sign language. HIs adaptability, advocacy and curiosity reflect the family’s approach to overcoming challenges with creativity and resilience.

He is a budding advocate, inspired by his older siblings to champion accessibility and inclusion in his own way.

The Family’s Collective Vision:

Together, this family embodies the mission of Unheard Voices—breaking down barriers, fostering understanding, and amplifying voices that deserve to be heard. Their personal experiences as a family navigating a mix of hearing abilities have given them unique insight into the needs of the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing community, inspiring them to build a nonprofit that fosters inclusion, accessibility, and awareness.
